Dear Fischer-Jeggens en,

Yes,as you guess, It Is Firth's old chair. However i do not take this over until next academic year. So please send any offprints or what-not to the old address. I believe by the way that I sent a review of Whatmough's book? Whfetmogh replied with.a letter of 130 lines, about four months later, saying among other things that I had obviously never heard of American structural linguistics! Also that the charge of tautology was irrelevant, since all scientific statements are tautologies, ^uch was the product of four months' thought. Hockett's book seems to be having a rough time of it: my own review was ami- able compared with hunt's,and even Halle's. Lunt was indeed hardly fair. He could have criticised Hockett'3 view that there Is often little to choose be- twe n one interpretation and another, but- he had no right to criticise him for accepting the consequences of this Xé/// view, without attacking the view itself?

Yours sincerely
