Dear Eli«

As you may have heard, academic financial problems are every bit as rampant here as elsewhere, and the administration has decided not to give the Department of Linguistics the professorship that was supposed to go to me. I have been forced, therefore, to consider the alternatives to Harvard. This turns out to have been a good thing, since I have discovered that I really would rather go to UCLA anyway« which I might never have realized if I hadn't been forced to. In any case, I am applying for a job there, replacing Theo Venneraann who has gone to Munich as you no doubt know. I would very much appreciate it if you could send a recommendation to Vicki Fromkin for me. I realize that it has been a while since we've talked, and you may feel you aren't in a position to judge my current work, but I would very much appreciate anything you could do for me. I hope Academic Press sent you a copy of my book, and that it got there. They were supposed to, anyway. I am very appreciative of the time you took to read it, and found your comments very helpful as you know. I received Rischel's book in the mail just the other day. It is a very impressive work - by the standards of European doctoral dissertations, and not just by^own (somewhat reduced, I'm afraid). Please convey my thanks to him; I will send him what comments I can when I have a chance to go through it carefully. Has your book on phonological schools appeared yet? I have in mind to give a course next year for which it would be most appropriate, and I'd like to keep track of it. Thank you again for anything you can do for me. Please give my regards to others in Copenhagen.

Best wishes and Season's greetings,

Stephen R. Anderson
