Professor U. Weinreich, 401 Philosophy Hall, Dpt. of General and Comparative Linguistics, Columbia University, Hew York 27» (U.S.A.).

Dear Professor Weinreich, Thank you very much for your kind letter of July 17, and for the trouble you have taken to resolve ray problem. I am sorry that the MS was too long (I think I must have misunderstood what Martinet wrote to me about the space at my disposal), and 1 am very grate- ful indeed to you and to Martinet that you are able to accept it as it stands. I am writing to Martinet at the same time.

I realise that in ay hurry I forgot to enclose, with my MS, a letter to you, and 1 hope you will for- give me this faux-pas on ray part. I shall expect the galley proofs and I shall not fail to return them by air as soon as possible. 1 am glad to know that 1 shall receive 100 re- prints gratis. 1 beg you to understand that X am extremely grate- ful for the patience with which you have been waiting for ray MS, and I am sorry that it took such a time to finish it. I am very glad to know that it will even- tually appear, - in spite of ray own sabotage! kindest regards to you and your family from us, Yours sincerely,

Louis Hjelmslev
