BREV TIL: Louis Hjelmslev FRA: Uriel Weinreich (1954-09-30)

Septemebr 30, 1954

Dear Professor Hjelmslev:

Impossible for ua to wait ao long. The printer had set up a ratherclose"schedule for the book, and we barely got your article in at all, as I wrote you on July 17. When I asked you to return the proofs "by airmail as soon as possible," I was really using a euphemism for "within 24 hours after receipt," and I now realize I should have been a little more explicit. I hoped' that as an

editor with far more experience than myself you would realize the necessity of utmost speed.

Having heard nothing from you after waiting for about ten days, I gave up hope and read proof myself, discovering the:great majority of mis- prints that you found also and checking the formulae against the manuscript,. All in all, then, your article will not appear in too bad a form, though there is no longer any way of inserting the addi- tional footnotes etc already in press.

If, on receipt of the printed article, you wish to submit a text for a brief list of errata, we could perhaps publish it in the next issue of Vora. If you wish, I could return the galleys with your markings to you for that purpose. I am sorry that things have turned out as they did, but my responsibility for the special issue of WORD did not permit me to wait so long.
