the prohibitiva-sociative-subjunctive is expressed by the compound ending -bi-sa-n-0 (see note to p. ), composed of the ending for the prohibitive, -hi- plus that of the sociative-subjunctive. It contains the idea ’in order that not', and so obviously includes the elements l':B and 2:B; the third-dimension element must be , because the proh.-soc.-subj. differs from the prohibitive-subjunctive in having the idea of 'duration' or, rather, in the possibility of having that segment, because the two supplement each other in another respect, the proh.-soc.-subj. deactivating 2:.A, and the proh.-subj. 2 rA of Person, so that the element 3 let of the former is often not filled with any content. Examples: bi:k'im mi:m 3sk'313wo:-h4-aa-n-0 he is afraid that he might tumble over; the proh.-soc.-subj. is directed by the indicative of the first nexus, and the whole example is thus one nexia. mihs tu:lemésem bittern miot'om tj 'aymisem mi:tj 'e 3:ni- bi—sa-n-Q only his relatives shot, lest they be angry, if somebody else shot [him] (XLV.13); the proh.-soc.-subj. is directed by the indicative ol the first nexus, and so is the subjunctive of the second nexus, so that it is all one nexia. The proh.-soc.-subj. is combined with the complex 'same (third) person as the directing extense characteristic', while the subjunctive has 'different third person'. k'313k * cyment'am ne:s .. osi osey-bé-sa-n-Q we did not go back, lest we experience something bad (LVI.ll); the direction is as in the examples above. The proh.-soc.-subj. is always directed, generally by an indicative, but also by other moods, e.g. the imperative, persuasive, interrogatives. It does not overlap with any other modal complexes.
