April 22, 1955

Dear Colleague: Thank you very much for your acceptance of our invitation to participate in the Festschrift for Roman Jakobson. The response has been very enthusiastic and we are most gratified by it. In view of the very large number of contributors, we are forced to impose certain limitations and to ask for a high degree of co- operation from you. Your manuscript must reach us not later than December 31, 1955. We urgently beg you to send it earlier if it is at all possible. The contributions cannot be longer than 4500 words, i. e. about ten of the printed pages in the journals Language or Word. Due to the large number of contributors, we must insist on this maxi- mum length, for even so the volume will be very big. Since we have no special secretarial help, we appeal to you to co- operate in presenting your manuscript in finished form: typewritten, double-spaced, on one side of the paper only. Please type footnotes separately at the end of the manuscript. You may include quotations in Cyrillic or Greek letters, and our printer has a complete set of the various modifications of the Roman alphabet needed for special linguistic work. Please send your manuscript to Prof. Morris Halle, Department of Modern Languages, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridgi 39, Massachusetts. Receipt of your manuscript will be acknowledged by return mail. We will inform you at a later date about questions of proof-reading and of subscriptions and prices.

Sincerely yours,

Horace G. Lunt
